Description

Kids with Autism often find it difficult to purposefully play with play dough. Some kids break it into small pieces, others are constantly trying to get it into their mouth and other kids just show no interest at all. Some kids will stay interested if someone is helping them use shape sorters or pressing toys, but get distracted if they have to organise what to do themselves.

One of the difficulties of playing with play dough is the fact that there are so many possibilities. Do I squash it? Do I eat it? Do I pull it apart? Do I smell it? Make a ball? Roll it into a snake? Make a face - what parts to I need to include? Which way does the cookie cutter shape go? The fact that there are lots of options is just too confusing for most kids with Autism.

We know that kids with Autism benefit from routine and visual supports to help them comprehend what they need to do. Play Dough 1 workbook has been designed to provide kids with that support. Each page of the workbook provides 'obvious answers' as to what to do with the play dough. Kids with Autism frequently have difficulty processing sensory information and often get overloaded with the amount of details to pay attention to. Play Dough 1 workbook has been designed to help kids know 'where to look' and 'what to do' to complete the structured activities. Repetition is used to promote attention to detail and help reduce distractibility. Kids learn to concentrate for longer periods of time by placing the spots onto the giraffe, develop better fine motor skills to roll snakes to finish the train track and learn about planning skills when making a face.

Play Dough 1 workbook is designed to be used with commercially available or homemade play dough. The worksheets can be laminated and used individually or bound together into a workbook to help kids play independently for longer periods of time.

Visual schedules are frequently used with kids with Autism to help them remain focused and understand what is coming next. The warning provided by the photos and Boardmaker PCS supports their comprehension and helps them understand how long they will need to concentrate for. Play Dough 1 workbook provides these visual supports all ready for you to print and use in your daily timetable.

The structure of the worksheets can assist kids with Autism to transition the skills from one environment to another. They can practice using play dough at pre-school or school and then transfer the skill to home by using the same worksheet.

The workbook contains 25 printable worksheets plus visual support photos and Boardmaker PCS symbols. Every child with Autism has their own unique learning style and instructions are provided to help parents provide extra support when needed.

This workbook is downloaded as a PDF file which uses Adobe Reader / Acrobat. It is licensed to be used on a single computer.
